Roads conditions are normally pretty good. However, there are several unsealed roads in New Zealand. You don’t need a 4WD for most of them and if you do, it’s written. We always recommend you getting the full cover insurance both for your rental and your own car. It happened to us that a small rock broke the windscreen and it would have been expensive to replace if we had to pay!
